Herbert Johnson Obituary

2 Timothy 4:7-8 – “7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”

Herbert Johnson was born to the late Lewis C. Slay and Kizzie Johnson on June 3, 1956 in Yantley, AL. He was the brother of his loved siblings, Carolyn Johnson, Edith Johnson Ruffin (Rodie), Joe Johnson (Clementine), Jackie Johnson Ray, the late Lonnie Townsend, Sr. (the late Ida Mae), and the late Kirk Watson (the late Annette). Herbert departed this life on February 27, 2024 peacefully at home with his family. Herbert (affectionately known by his family and close friends as “Sweetboy”) grew up in Yantley, AL. He graduated from Choctaw County High School. Sweetboy loved basketball since the age of 10 years. He later coached many young boys, along with his own son, Marques, in basketball. He never lost his love for the game!

Herbert moved to New Orleans, LA in 1974, where he met his love and later wife, Camille Wimberly. They were married on July 28, 1978, and they remained in their Covenant for over 45 years until his death departed them. From their union came three beloved children, Niki Williams, Marques Johnson, Sr. (Tarsha, Fiancée), and Valencia Johnson Scott (Dominick). He was Papa to his treasured grandchildren, Daisanae, I’Shyne, and Denim Scott, and Marques Johnson, Jr. He was the beloved brother-in-law to Tommie, Sr., Terrence, Sr. (Valerie), and Jacqueline Wimberly. He was Uncle Herb to his loving nephews and nieces, Michelle Abney, Kendrick Ruffin, Brandon and Fallon Johnson, Demikia and Kertrina Watson, Lonnie, Jr. and Danny Townsend, Tommie, Jr. and Terrence, Jr. Wimberly, and McCarla and McCullin Ray, the late Theresa Townsend Sylvester, and the late Mario Johnson, and his precious great-niece, the late Jada Watson. He was godfather to his loved godchildren, Nathaniel Evans, Leroy Hoard, Donald Rankins, Jr., Olivia Nickelson, and Stacie Doughty.

Herbert was baptized at an early age at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Yantley, AL. After moving to New Orleans, LA, he joined Ray Avenue Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Irvin Stafford, Sr. and the late Rev. Robert Johnson, Sr. He later moved his membership to Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Apostle Arthal Thomas, Sr., where he accepted the Lord in his life. He later moved his membership to Chief Cornerstone Full Gospel Ministries under the leadership of Apostle Gary Bailey, Sr., where Herbert was ordained as an Elder. He later moved his membership to Trumpet in Zion Fellowship under the leadership of Apostle Darryl McCoy, Sr., where he remained until he passed this life.

Herbert leaves to cherish his memories his devoted and loved wife, Camille, his dearly beloved children, his preciously adored grandchildren, his loved siblings, nephews, nieces, and godchildren, many brothers and sisters in Christ, and his other uncles, aunts, cousins, relatives, and friends.

23 Psalm – “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”
